In the middle of 1950s Budapest, there is a magic river. And there is no color--all the color has left the world.

The river kept Csilla's family safe from the Holocaust, but not from the Soviet police. As Csilla yearns to escape Hungary, protests in other countries ignite a student revolution that sweeps Csilla and her friends into the fight.

Part of Csilla wants to let Hungary burn to the ground, and part of her believes they can save it--with the help of a magical creature from Jewish folklore.
